These days, everyone blogs. But in the highly competitive world of organic rankings, there's a few checks you should be doing to ensure you're blogs have the best chance of attracting organic traffic and new users. Whether it be a personal blog or a business blog, it's important to check you're using the right strategy to optimise your posts. No matter the piece of content and the time it takes for you to create it, rushing through publishing for the sake of it will limit your content's effectiveness at attracting users to your site.

Here's 4 simple tips that any blogger can implement

1: Use your H2 Headings (Subheadings)

Using H2's is critical for crawlers on your page. Whilst your H1 is the most important and signals what the page is about, not using a H2 means you're signalling that everything else is equally as important. H2's give context to a page meaning not only will a crawler understand it better, but it also makes it easier for your visitors to read as well. From an SEO perspective, H2's also allow you to rank for keywords that aren't in your H1.

On the 12/4/2017, John Mueller of Google said you can use as many H1's as you want but keep in mind he was talking about this from an SEO perspective. Too many H1's get confusing for a reader so it's important to keep your H1's to what your topic is about, then use your H2's to expand on them and give context.

2: Show your new content on your home page or section page

There's multiple ways for someone to find your content. They can find it externally through your social media or email; organically through search; internally searching your website or by clicking on a link or image promoting it. The last is a very underused method of directing traffic around your site. Sometimes this may be set automatically to show latest posts, but if you can adjust it manually it's a great way to promote relevant or topical content.

3: Using visual content

Everyone loves a nice visual, but here's why you should one. As a guide, readers will only read 1/5 of the text on a page. Using an image not only helps to break up your text, but makes it more appealing and memorable. A post paired with a relevant image has shown 65% of people will retain it three days later, as opposed to just 10% without an image. Don’t forget about video content either (GIF’s included), 74% of internet traffic is related to video content.

4: Give your reader somewhere else to go

So you've got your reader to your page; now don't let them get away that easily. You can use external websites, however it's even better if you can redirect them through your own site. By doing this, you're achieving 2 key SEO objectives simultaneously - you're decreasing your bounce rate AND increasing on-site time. This is more often known as a call to action which is as simple as offering another piece of relevant content, however this can also include newsletter sign-ups, a lead form or even purchase.
